Campaigning in Carlisle

A successful day manning the information stall in Carlisle City Centre on Saturday 22nd March. The team were very encouraged by the amount of postive feedback they received from members of the public.
They also enjoyed the stimulation of engaging in challenging debate with one or two of the passers by and welcomed the opportunity to improve understanding of racial issues.

Carlisle Against Racism

Carlisle Against Racism was formed by local trade unionists, anti-racist campaigners and members of the public who came together to oppose racism in all its forms.

We wish to build a broad based anti-racist organisation in Carlisle and we invite all those who share our aims and objectives to join with us.

Our purpose

To promote Carlisle as a city that welcomes people from all cultures, by making sure that there is no place for racism and all other forms of intolerance.

What we believe

We believe that different cultures, races and nationalities bring something new and fresh to a community.

We believe that racism destroys communities by encouraging hatred between people who would normally get on.

We believe that racism feeds on people’s fears and myths about jobs, housing and immigration that are simply not true.

We believe that racist and fascist political parties deliberately seek to foster division and conflict within our communities.

What we do

We campaign against racist political activity:
1. By leafleting during election campaigns.
2. By lobbying political parties.
3. By providing information stalls in public.
4. By making sure that wherever racist organisations are active, we are there to give the truth.

We promote multi-culturalism and diversity in our neighbourhoods, at work and with friends and family:

1. By organising social events such as Rock Against Racism.
2. By organising and taking part in events that promote and celebrate our diversity.
3. By organising meetings in our communities and where we work.
4. By liaising with and supporting other organisations with similar aims.
5. By providing local information to combat myths and prejudices.
